What Is Nelson Naturals?
What better way to start off a review than to talk about where the product in review is coming from? Here’s a quick backstory of Nelson Naturals, what they stand for, and some exceptionally great things about their company:
Nelson Naturals was originally founded by Dana and Kevin in British Columbia (btw, check out my British Columbia-based adventures) who were on the hunt for effective fluoride-free toothpaste. When they couldn’t find what they were after they decided to create their own and sell it in jam jars at the local farmer’s market. As demand grew, they took their business to a professional level and are now a leading company in terms of natural and eco-friendly oral care.
I’m a sucker for a good Canadian-made product, so to be honest I was sold as soon as I found this out.
Putting my irrational love of Canadian-made products aside, I want to quickly make a comment about the kindness of one of the founders, Dana. Dana generously sent me a container of moringa toothpaste as well as a few samples of the Crush & Brush tablets so I could try them out. She is seriously SUCH a sweet individual and posts the most uplifting and lighthearted content on Instagram – all for the sake of making people smile. Check her out!
Other Great Things About Nelson’s Naturals
The products they produce are completely eco-friendly (glass/metal packaging) and are composed of natural, readable, and easily identifiable ingredients; you’d be surprised at how difficult this is to come by.
Additionally, they have refill centres (adding to how eco-friendly their products are) and the company donates 5% of their profits to animal charities!
Are you not swooning over Nelson Naturals yet? Because I sure am.
What Are Toothpaste Tablets?
Toothpaste tablets are a liquid-free toothpaste formula that are pressed into a pill-like shape. How do you use them? Pop one tablet in your mouth, chew it up, and brush!
The saliva in your mouth transforms the dry toothpaste formula into a foaming, liquid toothpaste.
Toothpaste tablets are a natural and completely eco-friendly alternative to tube style toothpastes. Did you know more than 1.5 billion toothpaste tubes are thrown out each year? Yiiiikes…
When you use toothpaste tablets you can take pride in the fact that you’re doing something healthy for your body and something healthy for the planet!
How Can You Use Toothpaste Tablets?
One of my favourite things about toothpaste tablets is how convenient they are. Tablets are spill-proof, leak-proof, and mess free. You can therefor toss them in your purse or pocket and carry them with you on the go.
Some of my favourite ways to use toothpaste tablets are:
Backcountry camping – toothpaste tablets are the PERFECT alternative to toothpaste for backcountry camping. They’re small, light, and mess-free.
You can explore my backpacking trail guides here.
Travel – tablets are small and solid. You can therefor easily fit them in your carry-on knowing they aren’t contributing to the tiny liquid allowance you get on planes.
On-the-go – tablets are perfect for long work days or for when you don’t necessarily have access to “toothbrushing facilities” (ie. road trips). Another great way I like to use these tablets is after eating a restaurant. In this scenario, just chew them up, swoosh the paste around your mouth, and spit in the bathroom sink for fresher post-dinner breath.
What Are Toothpaste Tablets Made of?
Toothpaste tablets are made of natural ingredients that are excellent for your teeth and your health. In my Nelson Naturals moringa toothpaste review I talk about the not-so-great ingredients that make up conventional toothpastes. Luckily with Nelson’s Naturals toothpaste tablets, you needn’t worry about any of those harmful ingredients!
Ingredient list: Calcium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, xylitol, potassium bitartrate (cream of tartar), *spearmint flavour, *peppermint flavour, gum arabic, sel marin (sea salt), menthol, magnesium stearate, silica. *organic ingredient.
^Nelson’s Naturals toothpaste tablets are vegan, fluoride-free, and gluten-free!
You’ll never find harmful ingredients like fluoride, sulfates, propylene glycol, or artificial colours or sweeteners in Nelson Naturals toothpaste tablets.
What’s up With the Ingredients?
I’m a big-time ingredient reader and I tear apart every product I use. I strive to find completely toxic-free, eco-friendly, and natural products. That whole “treat your body like a temple” thing – I take that shi* seriously.
- Calcium carbonate – removes plaque and strengthens teeth. It’s also used as a supplement for calcium deficient diets.
- Sodium bicarbonate (AKA baking soda) – mild abrasive, natural whitener, and creates an alkaline environment in your mouth which prevents bacteria growth.
- Potassium bitartrate – doesn’t necessarily have any benefits, however it helps hold the tablets together. Fun fact: potassium bitartrate is a byproduct of wine making and is a staple ingredient for making Play Doh.
- Gum arabic – contains high concentrations of calcium ions, which can potentially increase tooth remineralization and protect enamel.
- Sel marin – eradicates bacteria that contributes to the development of periodontal gum disease.
- Magnesium stearate – a soap which helps clean your teeth and form the tablet.
- Silica – this is an abrasive which helps remove plaque.

Nelson’s Naturals Toothpaste Tablets Review
Okay, I’ll go right ahead and say it – I’m OBSESSED with Nelson Naturals toothpaste tablets!!!
This was my first time trying toothpaste tablets and I didn’t quite know what to expect. I’d been eyeing them for a while because I liked how portable and convenient they were, so when Nelson Naturals sent me some I was AMPED!
After you chew them, they foam up almost instantly. And people, I’m talking a LOT of foam (like so much). I used them for the first time with a friend and we both agreed that our teeth felt super clean afterwards! Plus, our breathe was minty fresh.
I’m so impressed by these tablets that I’m confidently recommending them to you and to anyone else who’s interested in trying a sustainable, travel-friendly, and natural oral care routine. There are many brands that make toothpaste tablets, but I can guarantee you Nelson’s Naturals ingredient list is one of the cleanest on the market.
Up until trying Nelson Naturals toothpaste and toothpaste tablets, I was a dedicated David’s toothpaste user. The Nelson Naturals products work sooo well though, I’m seriously considering making the switch from David’s to Nelson. And that’s saying a lot!
Nelson Naturals Toothpaste Tablets FAQ
Do they actually work?
Yes! I was shocked at how clean my teeth felt and how fresh my breath was after trying the tablets just once.
Is Mint The Only Flavour?
Nelson Naturals toothpaste tablets are all mint flavoured, but there is a charcoal infused option as well. Charcoal has additional whitening and cleaning properties.
How Much Do They Cost?
One jar costs $15 and contains 80 tablets. You only need one tablet at a time so these will last you quite a while, especially if you’re using them infrequently for travel/backcountry camping purposes.
If you plan on using the tablets more frequently you can also bundle to save. There’s a 2-pack which has 1 mint and 1 charcoal infused jar, or you can buy a 12 pack which is ideal for families or for those wanting to strictly use toothpaste tablets opposed to toothpaste.
Don’t forget to use my code HOLISTICBACKPACKER to save 10% off your toothpaste/tablets!
Where Can I buy Them?
You can keep an eye out at your local natural shop, however the easiest way to find them is online. Nelson Natural’s website always has inventory, however you can also find them on Well.ca – Canada’s ultimate online pharmacy for natural products. By the way, Well.ca ships completely plastic-free!
Other Tips For Eco-friendly & Natural Oral Care
There are so many ways you can implement both a sustainable and natural oral care routine. Here are a few of my favourite ways:
- Natural toothpaste – true natural toothpaste is packaged sustainably and is made of healthy ingredients that are good for your teeth AND your body. A couple of my favourites are David’s and Nelson Naturals; I’ve even written a full review about Nelson Naturals moringa toothpaste here.
- Oil pulling – something I do every morning. This is an Ayurvedic practise, it helps detoxify the body, and it strengthens/whitens your teeth. More on oil pulling here.
- Bamboo toothbrushes – the best bamboo toothbrushes I’ve been able to find are these ones from Brush Naked.
- Sustainably packaged floss – eco-friendly floss is something I recently discovered. You buy the initial floss package with the glass jar first, then only purchase refills after.
Switching to natural products may seem like a huge commitment, and may even seem intimidating at first. Just know I’m here to help and answer any outstanding questions. Trust me, I’ve tried just about everything when it comes to natural & eco-friendly living 🙂
Don’t hesitate to send me an email at any time!
Happy adventuring!
